My name is Galen Rice, but you can call me G. Born in 1985, currently based in Flemington, NJ, I have been a professional software engineer since October, 2012, when I built a Django-based warehouse and logistics management site for a small company called Big Fly in North Bergen and then Secaucus, NJ.
I have an interest in Python as my primary language, though I dabble in TypeScript and React for frontend work as needed, while experimenting with system programming primarily in Rust. Much of my experience is in web development and data pipelines, though much of my time is spent on improving the overall developer experience. This takes many forms, from writing documentation intended for other humans to consume (and, to a lesser extent, their AI interns) to diving into code quality automations and CI/CD workflows (mostly GitHub Actions).
I spend a lot of time digging into the why and how of the development process, much less than I do into algorithms and data structures. People are at the heart of the machine, identifying useful patterns and developing solutions to problems. Modern AI tools augment that process, but cannot completely replace those humans; so I strive to make their lives a little easier.
You'll find me occasionally hanging out in the Python Discord help channels, offering assistance to folks, especially newcomers to the language.
When I unplug from the digital world, I'm a fulltime spouse to my lovely partner, Molly; and father to 2 children, 2 cats, and 1 dog (as of this writing!). I enjoy playing Magic: The Gathering (casual Commander), open world games on PS5 and Steam, and board games that involve space themes and lots of interaction (and whatever the kids are into, of course).
You can see my current side projects in my GitHub and/or in my Projects page. You can also see my Resume displayed below, detailing my professional work and projects I'm not at liberty to showcase publicly.
I can be reached at my primary email,
galen at griceturrble dot com.
I may not have a ton of time to dedicate to collaborative projects,
but I'm open to general questions and assistance
(though if you need something more immediate,
I would encourage you hit up the fine folks on Python Discord, instead).
Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
